We've been speaking a different language around here and it has QUITE a few of you scratching your heads. We get it! So we thought we would dedicate the Align Wellness Studio's first blog post to a very important topic...bone health!
A few weeks back, four of our instructors spent a weekend learning from the incredible Rebekah Rotstein who has dedicated her life's work to improving bone health via her BUFF BONES® program, a medically endorsed full body workout that incorporates bone strengthening and balance enhancing techniques. This is not just for those with osteoporosis or osteopenia though...this is for ALL of us! This workout is no joke, folks! Mindy, Gwen, Amy and Tara squatted, lunged and planked their way to some pretty sore glutes and quads (and some pretty strong wrists and pelvises, we might add!)
So how are these BUFF BONES® workouts different than other Pilates classes? For one, certain positions or exercises are contraindicated (in other words, no bueno!) You will not be curling your neck and shoulders off of the mat in a BUFF BONES® class as that makes those with low bone density more susceptible to spinal fractures. Second, you will be doing most of your exercises with a neutral pelvis which is often more challenging for your abdominals. Then of course there is the fact that the BUFF BONES® program incorporates a little Pilates, a little physical therapy and a little cross training to strengthen the areas most susceptible to fracture as we age, such as the wrists and the pelvis.
